It’s an all two familiar scene. You’re driving to work ready to face the normal day and upon your road you see an accident. Of course, it’s the Christian thing to do to take a moment to pray for all that are involved from the car accident individuals to the first responders who all have arrived quickly upon the seat. You briefly wander if they’re OK or if they have survived this ordeal. You wonder what has been seen the accident and the resulting trauma that may become after everyone who witnessed it.
Yet, as I drove past this all two familiar scene one morning where there was an accident where a truck was completely smashed in on the hood and it looked like the airbags deployed, and I didn’t see and then individual …
… that I thought a little deeper …
I knew that I would continue on to my day like normal but knew that immediately that individual’s day, and everyone around it, had changed whether for the short term or for the long-term.
I think sometimes we get so comfortable in our routine that we might not even stop to think what that thing happened to us.
What if we were going through a normal day and some slight inconvenience like an accident happened and wrecked all of our prescheduled plans?
No, I’m not saying that there’s gonna be accidents every day in your routine or that you’re even going to some major uncle inconvenient happen to shift your schedule. However, you might want to think about when other things interrupt your plans and if you’re truly making space for those interruptions.
What if you’re waiting for the elevator at work and you make small talk with a person who just started their day off bad and you didn’t even know it and your kind gesture made them smile?
What if you’re at Starbucks and someone was praying for someone to talk to them just so they wouldn’t take their life that day and all you said was hi and asked about the weather?
What if a friend asked you out of the blue for a huge favor that would would take you less than an hour of your time but it wasn’t on your preplanned schedule?
I wonder if you make spaces for these kinds of interruptions in our lives to not only help us gain daily perspective, but also to make space for those around us to join in this wild and crazy thing we call life.
